DISTRICT-WIDE - STUDENTS and STAFF

The 4th annual MCSD Race for the Schools was held on Saturday, May 7th. Congratulations to overall winners in the 5K: Jonathan Estabrook (16:49) and our very own MCSD Elementary Art Teacher Nancy Foxen (18:16)!! Awesome fast times! Congratulations to Colorado School for having the most participants and earning the School Challenge Award! Temp Associates won the Corporate Challenge Award for the business with the most participants. Thanks to all the wonderful volunteers and sponsors. Please visit the Muscatine Running Club website for the 5K results and pictures from race day.

There are a few race shirts left (purple performance shirt with white logo). If you would like to purchase a shirt ($10 - checks to MCSF) please contact Daphne Donald.

Four educators and city officials from Ramallah, Palestine (one of Muscatine's Sister Cities) visited Muscatine for almost two weeks to participate in workshops regarding elementary special education and early intervention.

While in Muscatine, they visited McKinley, Grant, and Franklin Elementary Schools and worked directly with teachers and school principals. They met with Superintendent Riibe to discuss the school system in Muscatine and to learn more about special education programs.

COLORADO ELEMENTARY

Mrs. Noll's 1st grade class presented a musical play, Over the Bridge. The students did a great job!

FRANKLIN ELEMENTARY

Mrs. Sneath's and Mrs. Calderon's 3rd grade enrichment groups (English Language Learners and Special Ed) researched a country and "created" their own country for Diversity Day at Franklin Elementary.

Students in Mrs. Hawkins' special education classes enjoyed Franklin's Diversity/Cultural Day and their 3rd grade field trip to the Putnam Museum!

GRANT ELEMENTARY

Second graders in Mrs. Morton's class took a trip to the Devonian Fossil Gorge in Coralville. They had a blast learning about different animals and searching for fossils!

JEFFERSON ELEMENTARY

Mrs. Todd's 3rd grade class at Jefferson enjoyed attending the River Bandit's Game in the Quad Cities.

First grade students in Mrs. Paca's class enjoyed going to Niabi Zoo!

MULBERRY ELEMENTARY

Ms. Pharr's, Ms. Hampton's, Mrs. Burns', and Mrs. Story's classes walked to the high school to cheer on the athletes at the 5th grade track meet.

WASHINGTON ELEMENTARY

Students in Mrs. Roelf's 1st grade class enjoyed seeing the animals at Niabi Zoo!

MIDDLE SCHOOL

Congratulations to the middle school FFA Horse Judging Team as they finished 3rd overall at the state competition held in Iowa Falls at the Ellsworth Equine Center!

WEST MIDDLE SCHOOL

Students in Ms. Kirchner's, Ms. Ralston's, and Ms. Runyon's math classrooms participated in a Barbie Bungee Jump experiment.

8th graders presented their Presentations of Learning in Ms. Bezdek's class at WMS. They had to reflect on the year and choose their three skill strengths in the ELA classroom. They had to present three work samples that demonstrated these strengths.

Students in Mr. Yerington's 6th grade science class made space rovers after learning about the planets. Next week they will hold races so watch for those pictures next week! And... one student made a song about his rover!

MUSCATINE HIGH SCHOOL

Students in Mrs. Edkin's Cardio Movement classes bring rhythm and exercise together by performing fitness drumming!

Mrs. Walker's Chemistry class at the high school have been building hot air balloons using on 6-10 sheets of tissue paper and glue sticks. Today, they launched them! We had some not fly at all, and we had some hit the top of the skylight in the new wing. This is being tied to all of our units for this semester.

Fifty agricultural and East Campus students went to Monsanto Company's research and development headquarters in Chesterfield, Missouri on Tuesday. The students extracted DNA from strawberries, toured the grow chambers, visited the machine shop, chipped seeds to identify characteristics for further research, and attended a career panel forum. Many students stepped into Brazil or Argentina in the grow chambers as the grow chambers are able to replicate the growing conditions in any area of the world. Another stop was the St. Louis Zoo where the students visited sea lions, penguins, and rhinoceros to name several. The students enjoyed seeing the opportunities available with a large biotech company.

Congratulations to the Muscatine FFA Horse Judging team as they won 2nd in reasons/questions, 1st in halter, and is the reserve state champion team! Tiffany Tomlin won reasons and is the individual state champion!

A big shout out to our high school athletes who helped with the 5th grade track meet!

The MHS concert bands held their spring concert and senior recognition evening this week and performed to a full house!
