Board Briefs for the Monday, May 9, 2016 Regular Meeting

Below is a synopsis of the Monday, May 9, 2016 regular meeting of the Muscatine Schools' Board of Education. The meeting was held at City Hall in Council Chambers.


Regular Meeting

Present: President Tammi Drawbaugh and Vice President Mary Wildermuth. Board of Directors John Dabeet, Aaron Finn, Nathan Mather, and Randy Naber. Director Tim Bower was absent. Also present: Superintendent Jerry Riibe and Director of Finance Jean Garner.

  1. No one spoke during Citizens Speak.
  2. MHS Student Council representative Saul Ocampo gave an update on recent student council activities.
  3. The consent agenda was approved which included:
    1. Minutes of the April 25, 2016 planning and regular meeting.
    2. Employment Recommendations of:
      1. Resignations: Brandi Peterson - At-Risk ELA at MHS.
      2. Resignations-Classified Professionals: Cindy Rada - Nutritionist/Dietician.
      3. New Hires-Certified Staff
        1. Madelyn Deuth - 7th Grade Science & Social Studies.
        2. Joseph Kane - Special Ed Strat II at MHS.
        3. Emma McCreary - ELA & Social Studies @ CMS.
        4. Dustin Miller - Spanish at MHS.
        5. Brian Willett - Behavioral Disabilities at WMS.
    3. Bills and Claims against the district dated May 9, 2016.
  4. The List of Tentative Graduates for the Class of 2016 was approved.
  5. The request to change the last student day to Thursday, May 26, 2016 was approved.
  6. The request to award bid to Tierney Brothers in the amount not to exceed $519,200 for the purchase of Chromebooks for MHS was approved.
  7. Approved the request to demolish the wood playground structure at Franklin Elementary.
  8. The board heard a second reading on the following policies:
    1. 204.3 Special Board Meetings
    2. 204.4 Closed Sessions of the Board
    3. 300 Role of School District Administration (new)
    4. 300.1 Management (new)
    5. 301.1 Functions
    6. 301.2 Evaluation
    7. 301.3 Superintendent Qualifications, Recruitment, Appointment (new)
    8. 301.4 Superintendent Contract and Contract Non-renewal (new)
    9. 301.5 Superintendent Salary and Other Compensation (new)
    10. 301.6 Superintendent Professional Development (new)
    11. 301.7 Superintendent Civic Activities (new)
    12. 301.8 Superintendent Consulting/Outside Employment (new)

    14. 302.2 Evaluation

  9. The board heard a first reading to delete Policy 401.8 Physical Examinations.
  10. Jefferson Principal Corry Spies and Reading teacher Nancy Reichert gave a presentation on the new elementary reading series. They explained the process, the next steps, and had books available from the series for the board to review.
  11. Director of Finance Jean Garner reviewed the April financials.
  12. Superintendent Riibe recognized board members for their service to the students of Muscatine Schools as part of School Board Recognition Month.
  13. The following future meetings and events were announced:
    1. May 15 - Excellence in Education Award Ceremony at 2 p.m. at MHS Auditorium.
    2. May 19 - Washington Community Celebration at 4:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. 
    3. May 22 - Graduation Ceremony for the Class of 2016 at 2 p.m. at the MHS Gymnasium.
    4. May 26 - Students Last Day.
    5. May 30 - Memorial Day.
    6. May 31 - Last Day for Teachers
  14. The meeting adjourned at 7:43 p.m.
